Geneseo Collegiate Institute



This is a picture of the Geneseo Collegiate Institute which was chartered on November 21, 1883 by the state. September 16, 1884 was the formal opening of the institute. It was located on the corner of State and Main Street in Geneseo, which had once belong to and had been occupied by the First National Bank. The Board of Aid for Colleges and Academies of the Presbyterian Church made annual contributions to maintain the school. It faced the present day city park. The first principle was the Rev. Norbury W. Thorton of Millersburg, IL. The building was capable of accommodating 300 pupils. The school closed in 1922.
